How to care for cotton

Machine wash warm or cold, tumble dry low or line dry.Cotton is strong and easy to look after. The main risks are shrinking in heat and fading in the wash.

Washing

  • Machine wash at up to 40°C (104°F). White cotton can take 60°C (140°F).
  • Wash dark colours inside out, in cold water, to slow fading.
  • Wash new coloured cotton on its own the first time, as dye can run.

Drying

  • Tumble dry on low or medium, or line dry.
  • High heat shrinks cotton. Take it out slightly damp if you want less shrinkage.

Ironing

  • Cotton takes a hot iron. Iron it slightly damp, or use steam.

Storing

  • Fold or hang. Keep it dry, as damp cotton gets musty.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Washing at high heat the first time, which shrinks it.
  • Leaving wet clothes in the machine, which makes them smell.

Always follow the care label on the garment. Blends, dyes and finishes can change what a piece can take, and a lower temperature is always safe. Thraed records the fabric of each piece you scan, so it is in your closet when you need it.
