How to care for linen

Machine wash warm or cold, line dry, iron damp.Linen gets softer with every wash and lasts for years. It wrinkles easily, and that is part of how it looks.

Washing

  • Machine wash at up to 40°C (104°F) on a gentle or normal cycle.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach. Do not overload the drum.

Drying

  • Line dry, or tumble dry low and remove while slightly damp.
  • Shake out when you take it off the line to reduce creases.

Ironing

  • Iron while still damp on a high setting, or steam. Iron dark linen inside out.

Storing

  • Hang or fold loosely. Linen creases where it is folded, so vary the folds.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Over-drying, which makes it stiff.
  • Washing hot the first time, which shrinks it.

Always follow the care label on the garment. Blends, dyes and finishes can change what a piece can take, and a lower temperature is always safe. Thraed records the fabric of each piece you scan, so it is in your closet when you need it.
